9 Must Watch Movies Released in 2000s


There were tons of great movies that were released in the decade of 2000s. Many great stories were brought to life by equally great writers and directors. Among the piles of great movies, here are our list of best movies of the decade of 2000s.

1) Borat (2006) IMDb – 7.3
Borat or Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is a mockumentary about the culture of Kazakhstan. This is a daring movie cause there’s no way a movie like this could be made today without any # trending on social media. Borat, a Kazakh journalist travels to US to make a documentary only to find out the “weird” social norms that is present in the US. It is one of the funniest movies ever made and some of it isn’t even scripted. Sacha Baron Cohen deserves praises for being involved in a movie like this and after watching this movie you’ll always see him as Borat.


2) 500 Days of Summer (2009) IMDb – 7.7
500 Days of Summer is not a love story but rather the beginning of something good. At the very beginning, we are told this is not a love story but rather a story about a boy and girl. A boy falls in love with a girl who doesn’t want to be in a serious relationship. And so the movie follows a non-linear pattern of their sometimes dead relation while other times their new and alive relation. Ultimately, things don’t go as they want them to so they separate with each other. It’s a powerful story not about falling in love happily but rather the beauty of trying. No one knows how it’s gonna end so you might as well try it, right?

3) The Prestige (2006) IMDb – 8.5
Christopher Nolan’s 2006 masterpiece was critically acclaimed. It is one of those movies that even after watching it for a number of times, it still manages to entertain you with its hidden details and plots. It’s about the rivalry of two former friends now magicians who try to sabotage each other’s tricks in order to gain their secrets. This rivalry soon reaches a dangerous point in their lives destroying everything they’ve managed to build so far. The Prestige truly is a prestige movie without a doubt.

4) Little Miss Sunshine (2006) IMDb – 7.8
Little Miss Sunshine is a wholesome/comedy movie about a little girl who wants to participate in a beauty pageant that is across the country. And so it’s about her journey to the beauty pageant with her family. Little Miss Sunshine isn’t just a family wholesome movie but there are some occasional dark subjects in it. And the fact that it’s mostly seen from the point of view of the little girl is what makes it special. Because of that, the tone of the cinematography is so warm and fussy, even in heartbreaking scenes, the movie has a warm feeling to it.

5) Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) IMDb – 7.9
Letters from Iwo Jima is a movie made exquisitely based on the letters found on the island of Iwo Jima written by the Japanese soldiers during the Second World War against the US. The movie shows the difficult and hard situations faced by the Japanese soldiers during the battle as well as the countless heartbreaking things that they had to do. What makes the movie even sadder is the fact that we already know what’s gonna happen in the end but what keeps us at the edge of our seat is how it happened. Clint Eastwood brilliantly managed to show that.

6) Spirited Away (2001) IMDb – 8.6
Spirited Away is not just for kids. Adults can also enjoy this movie and can still manage to learn something from it. It’s a story about a little girl whose parents are transformed into pigs after eating the foods inside an abandoned amusement park. It’s later discovered that this park is a place for ghosts and spirits to “rest” or “enjoy”. In order to save her parents from being eaten as pigs, she is forced to work there. It’s widely regarded as the best animation film of all time.

7) Avatar (2009) IMDb – 7.8
James Cameron’s Avatar smashed box office when it was released and after the 3D version, Avatar became the highest-grossing movie ever until recently being surpassed by Avengers: Endgame. Avatar is a movie about a paraplegic Marine who replaces his brother after his death to Na’ vi inhabited Pandora for a corporate mission. He is then faced with a decision, to either follow their mission or protect the alien world which he thinks as home.

8) Mystic River (2003) IMDb – 7.9 & No Country for Old Men (2007) IMDb – 8.1
It was tough choosing between Mystic River and No Country for Old Men, so we decided to include both as the best thriller of 2000s. Mystic River is about a father, who after the brutal death of his daughter tries to solve the case himself and ultimately makes a decision which he will regret later after finding the real truth about the murder.
No Country for Old Men is about a psychopathic killer who kills everyone in his path for the search of money that a hunter took from a drug deal gone wrong situation.

9) The Dark Knight (2008) IMDb – 9
The Dark Knight is perhaps one of the best movies ever and it certainly is the best superhero movie and here’s why; unlike other superhero movies, The Dark Knight challenges the social norms of the society. There’s a reason why Joker is regarded as one of the greatest supervillains, it’s cause instead of money and power, he wants to prove that the people when given choice to save themselves by killing others will always choose to kill others. However, in the end, it doesn’t work that way and so that’s how joker defects. Plus, The Dark Knight also introduced another villain, the Two-faced, his birth, and his eventual fall.
