The decade of the 1990s was particularly good for movies. Movies like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption all coming on the some year, i.e. 1994. We’ve made a list of great movies of somewhat diverse genres that all came in the same decade of 1990s.

1) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) IMDb – 9.3
Out of the holy trinity of movies, we’ve chosen The Shawshank Redemption. Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump both of these movies are great and all but Shawshank’s emotional yet hopeful story has and will always make an impact upon the viewers watching this for the first time. From the emotional death of an old man who couldn’t adjust in the cruel and fast society to the power of being hopeful for the future, The Shawshank Redemption is one the greatest movie ever made.

2) The Big Lebowski (1998) IMDb – 8.1
For comedy, we don’t think there was any movie better than The Big Lebowski. Granted, this movie is more than just a comedy but you can’t deny its impact on modern movies. To sum it up without giving away any major plot, this movie is about “The Dude” who wants a rug to tie his living room nicely. This movie gets better with each watch. With memorable quotes and funny humor, The Big Lebowski shows “The Dude” inside all of us.

3) Seven (1995) IMDb – 8.6
A dark thriller that will hook you till the very end. Seven is a movie about a serial killer who kills people according to the seven deadly sins and it is the job of two detectives to prevent his murderous spree. Unlike other movies, where the ending is mostly overlooked or overshadowed by their thick plot, Seven will maintain its everlasting suspense till the very end. Seven was one of the best thriller/crime of the 1990s.

4) The Silence of The Lambs (1991) IMDb – 8.6
We all remember Anthony Hopkins’ haunting performance as the psychopathic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of The Lambs. It is the only horror movie till date, to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and deservingly so. The FBI seeks help from Hannibal Lecter to find another serial killer who skins his victims. It’s a thrilling movie and rarely will it ever disappoint you.

5) The Matrix (1999) IMDb – 8.7
The Matrix is a movie about people trapped inside a simulation or in a longer and more interesting description, in a dystopian future, humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality called the Matrix, created by intelligent machines to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source. The Matrix is one of the best action/sci-fi movies ever and still today it is cherished for it’s incredible fight sequence and visuals as well as the story.

6) Saving Private Ryan (1998) IMDb – 8.6
It came as a surprise when Saving Private Ryan, clearly the best movie of that year lost to Shakespeare in Love. No one remembers Shakespeare in Love but everyone talks about how great Saving Private Ryan was. After all three brothers being killed on the battle field, Captain John Miller is assigned the task of searching for Private James Ryan and to bring him home. When ranking war movies, Saving Private Ryan always remains inside the top 5.

7) American Beauty (1999) IMDb – 8.3
Lester Burnham, who has a respectable job and a family is infatuated with his daughter’s friend. It’s a movie about a middle aged man trying to impress his daughter’s friend which sounds like a dark drama but there are a lot of comedic scenes in it. It’s a movie about romance and drama but the comedic scene fits right into it. It can even be a life changing movie, it all depends on how you see this brilliant movie.

We’d also like to mention The Thin Red Line (1998) and Schindler’s List (1993) which are some of the greatest movie from cinematic and story telling point of view.
